Jim Drysdale


Jim is a partner in our Land Resources and Private Client departments.
He is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in agricultural law and is recognised as a 'leader in their field' by leading legal directory Chambers UK 2012 for Environment (Scotland) and Agriculture & Rural Affairs (Scotland). Jim holds a certificate in environmental law from Glasgow University. He is a trustee of several family trusts and through them is involved in various family businesses.
Jim deals in all aspects of agricultural and rural law, including business structures, purchases, sales, leasing, forestry, salmon fisheries and sportings, land use and management including diversification, development and minerals, renewable energy, wind and hydro, and coalbed methane gas.
Jim is also an environmental lawyer and provides advice on environmental compliance for a broad range of major clients. He is co-founder of a cross-border environmental group which meets quarterly in London to exchange information and discuss developments in environmental law.
Jim also has a considerable Private Client practice advising on trusts, tax and financial planning. He is also involved in advising family businesses on the broad range of issues affecting them
Having had a lifelong involvement with horses he also has a broad equestrian law expertise.
Jim is a member of the Agricultural Law Association and until 5 July 2009, having served the full term, was a council member and treasurer of the United Kingdom Environmental Law Association (UKELA). He is currently treasurer and council member of the UKELA Scottish Group. He was also legal adviser to the Association of Scottish District Salmon Fishery Boards for more than 15 years, which has given him comprehensive experience of environmental, fisheries and water law.
Jim is a regular speaker at seminars on rural, private client, equestrian and environmental law.
